"The Croakers" collection, [184-?]-1904.

Collection of materials related to the Bradford Club's publication of "The Croakers", a group of satirical poems primarily about New York politics and society which appeared in various local newspapers around 1819. The poems were written by Joseph Rodman Drake and Fitz Greene Halleck. This collection includes one manuscript collection of "Croakers" (1848) and one annotated print edition probably done by John Moreau (1860 with additions to 1904); two manuscript collections of "Croaker" imitations (1840s?); and one scrapbook of clippings relating to the Bradford Club's publication of "The Croakers" and other manuscripts of historical interest (1859-1867).

American author and poet, born and died in Guildford, Connecticut. After a youth spent in business in Connecticut, Halleck came to New York City and attracted attention with humorous articles he wrote for the New York Evening Post.
